My tab / system audio sounds choppy or distorted

If your recording’s tab or system audio sounds choppy or distorted, there are a few steps you can take to resolve the problem. For more information on the difference between microphone, tab and system audio, click here.

If you want to record tab audio AND narrate over your recording, we recommend using headphones. If you don't use headphones, the tab audio coming from your computer's speakers may be picked up by your microphone and distort the sound.

Step 1: Close unnecessary tabs and applications

Close all unnecessary browser tabs and applications before you start recording. Screen recording is a CPU-intensive process, therefore, some lag is possible if you have many competing programs, applications and processes running while you're recording.

Step 2: Check the volume levels of your source audio

If the volume for your tab or system audio is too loud, it will create choppy or distorted audio within the Screencastify recording. Try reducing the volume of whatever the source of your tab/system audio is, and test another Screencastify recording with the new volume levels.

Step 3: Check your speaker settings (Windows only)

  1. Right click the speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen and select "Playback devices"
  2. Right click whatever speakers are already highlighted and select "Configure Speakers"
  3. Ensure that "Audio channels" is set to "Stereo"

Step 4: Change Hardware Encoding settings

Switch the “Hardware encoding” in your extension's Options page ( here’s a video demonstrating how to do that).

Step 5: Restart your computer

If the problem persists, restarting your computer will reload all of the resources needed to capture the audio from the system or tab.

Step 6: Uninstall and reinstall Screencastify

If you've tried all of the above steps and are still hearing choppy or distorted audio, we recommend you uninstall and reinstall Screencastify.

If you save your recordings locally (and not to your Google Drive), they will be permanently deleted when you uninstall Screencastify. Please be sure to export them before you proceed.

If you have followed the above steps and your audio still sounds choppy or distorted,  submit your logs to customer support. Please indicate that you've already tried the solutions above and provide as much detail as possible.
